Chronic progressive forms of encephalitis (epidemic Economo, tick-borne) are considered from the concept of "slow infections" where the virus following the acute phase of the disease, in the latent state during many years, is persistent in the human organism. The author attributes herpetic encephalitis to this group of disorders. Unlike the slow, gradually developing forms of encephalitis and diseases with a protracted incubational period, herpetical encephalitis develops acutely and may be allocated to "slow infections" in respect to a protracted infection with a long-term persistent virus in the latent condition. |
