Popis: A case report of the neuropsychiatric consequence of long-standing portal caval shunting in a man without intrinsic liver disease is described. Because of his neuropsychiatric status he underwent liver transplantation. Over the succeeding 8 months he had progressive improvement in his neuropsychiatric performance. These data document the adverse effects of portal caval shunting on neuropsychiatric performance in the absence of intrinsic liver disease as well as their reversibility with shunt closure.
