Objective To evaluate the perception of nursing staff regarding the safety climate among healthcare professionals from public and private institutions. Method This is a cross-sectional, quantitative study conducted with 235 nursing professionals from a private hospital and a public hospital in Campinas, between October 2014 and October 2015. The Safety Attitudes Questionnaire - Short Form was used to collect data. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used for analysis, and the Mann-Whitney test was used to compare the institutions. Results The private institution had higher averages than the public institution, and significant differences in the areas of safety climate (p=0.00), unit management (p0.0001), hospital management (p=0.0001), working conditions (p=0.0001), and teamwork (p=0.00).
