President Trump’s campaign to “Make America Great Again” does not engage the potential of higher education to support the goal of reinventing an undefined period of American superiority. Rather, Trump confuses the purpose of institution types and proposes that learning should be separated into elite, Ivy League education, and working-class apprenticeships. The fault lines between social classes and tertiary higher education are most evident in the current historical context. This positions higher education to either falter with Trump’s misguided agenda or take initiative to reinvent the way higher education can serve the public. |
