After having analyzed the various instuments which have ensured and still ensure economic dominance in the course of history, we tend to think that such a factual approach might lead to ignore any given country’s underlying ideology. This is particularly true when pragmatism combines with ideology, to give birth to a so-called ideological pragmatism typical of the American mindset since the landing of the Mayflower pilgrims. This article aims to bring out the major ingredients of this apparent oxymoron, i.e. empiricism, utilitarianism, ethical concerns and missionary spirit – with particular reference to Jeremy Bentham, Charles Sanders Pierce and William James whose ways of thinking are still alive in the US business community. |
