The first decade after the 2nd World War became a florescence for female religious orders. The number of members in Germany, for instance, peaked out at more than 90 000 sisters. But from the 1960s on, the number of women religious in Germany declined. Remaining sisters suffered from exits, death of familiar members and a deficit of novices.
