Since the mid-1990s, Ireland has experienced a marked increase in the number of immigrants arriving to work in the currently booming economy. During the same period, the number of people coming to Ireland to seek asylum has also risen dramatically. The rate of asylum applications, at about 3 per 1000 of the population, is the second highest in the European Union, after Belgium.
