The following is a summary of some of the key findings of an ESRC-funded project (Grant number RES-062-23-0733) based at the ICMA centre, Henley Business School, University of Reading. This study applied modern financial analysis and theories to the early history of sovereign debt, in this case the credit arrangements between the ‘Three Edwards’, kings of England 1272–1377, and a succession of Italian merchant societies.
