This master's thesis examines the ways in which the COVID-19 crisis impacted tourism in emerging markets versus developed countries and compares and contrasts the findings. Both Mariazell in Austria, which is considered a developed country, and Hortobágy in Hungary, which is considered an emerging country, were chosen for the case study. For this purpose, qualitative interviews with the owners and managers of a variety of tourism-related businesses in both nations were carried out. In addition, quantitative key figures were analyzed to indicate, in the form of statistical data, what the effects of the pandemic were. These demonstrated that the COVID-19 crisis had a greater impact on the tourism industry in the Hortobágy region than it did in Mariazell. Although the monetary support that was provided by the respective administrations in the two countries were different, the countries performed more similarly than was initially anticipated. As a consequence of these actions, the interviewed companies were forced to adjust their business models, particularly in Mariazell, where emergency pick-up and delivery services were established in order to combat the situation.
