М30 М33 Decarbonization of district heating systems requires ensuring significant amounts of renewable energy available in the proximity of the district heating network. One of the promising solutions is the utilization of purified water from wastewater treatment plants by heat pumps. However, as a heat source, wastewater treatment plants are characterized by annual variability of the flow and temperature of purified water. The consequence is the variability of recoverable heat potential. In this paper, the effect of variability is analyzed for the case of the wastewater treatment plant in Šabac in the period of 2 heating seasons (period October - April). The electrically driven heat pump-based system for utilization of wastewater energy in local district heating system was proposed, and basic expected parameters of operation were presented. Fossil fuel savings and CO2 emission reduction due to wastewater heat pump usage were calculated. The results indicate the significant negative influence of wastewater flow variation to the amount of energy produced by heat pump, as well as the necessity for the introduction of buffers – a reservoir of purified water and heat storage for optimization of a heat pump operation. In addition, negligible reduction in CO2 emission points to the negative impact of Serbian power sector structure with a dominant share of lignite. |
