There are many highway tunnels built in the Eastern Black Sea Region, these tunnels not only provide convenience for transportation, but also play an important role in country’s economic growth and transportation. In this paper, different rock classification methods and proposed tunnel support systems were investigated along the right tube entrance and exit of Güneyce Tunnel (Ikizdere, Rize), which is under construction by drilling and blasting method on Rize-Ispir highway. A geological map of the study area at 1/100.000 scale and another geological map along the tunnel route at 1/100 scale were prepared in order to create the geological model and define geological units. It is determined that Güneyce tunnel is being constructed in Late Cretaceous Kizilkaya formation and Ikizdere Granitoid. There are three boreholes on tunnel route and laboratory tests were carried out in Karadeniz Technical University Geological Engineering Department. The related tests were conducted on rock specimens taken from the geotechnical units along the tunnel route in order to determine their physical, mechanical and elastic properties. Discontinuity line survey studies were carried out along the right tube entrance and exit of the Güneyce Tunnel to define discontinuity conditions. Using the results from the line survey studies and laboratory tests, geotechnical units along the tunnel route were classified according to Q, RMR14, NATM and GSI rock mass classification systems. Moreover, pre-support designs which were appropriate for Q and RMR14 rock mass classifications were identified. As a result of these studies, two different geological units along the Güneyce Tunnel route were divided into 4 different geotechnical units according to the properties of rock materials that could be critical in terms of tunnel design. © 2020, TMMOB - Jeoloji Muhendisleri Odasi.
