Measures of Healthcare Quality in Bulgaria from the Perspective of Medical Professional

| Popis: | Introduction: Measuring healthcare quality is critical for effective management of health systems. Medical experts play a significant role in the development of quality measures. The purpose of this study is to investigate medical experts' perspectives on the measures that should be used to assess the quality of healthcare in Bulgaria.Material and methods: A national online survey was conducted in November 2021. A total of 282 medical professionals completed the questionnaire and were included in the analysis.Results: The respondents rated all the recommended dimensions of healthcare quality as significant. Effectiveness and professional satisfaction get the most positive feedback (an average score of 3.8 out of 4). Professionals classify one of the indicators for accessibility—the provision of medical specialists by type (an average score of 1.9 out of 2)—and four of the indicators for effectiveness (an average score of 1.8 out of 2) as leading indicators for measuring the quality of healthcare in Bulgaria.Discussion: Medical experts rate the structural features of the health system less favorably on average. Professionals' preferences for the dimension of effectiveness could be seen in their selection of indicators for measuring quality. The effectiveness indicators, which assess the coverage and success of cancer prevention and treatment, diseases in children, and disorders that can be prevented or managed with prevention, have the highest average score. With the highest average score are the efficiency indicators that measure the coverage and success rate of preventive activity and treatment of oncological diseases, childhood diseases, and diseases that can be prevented with adequate prevention or managed with good treatment.Conclusion: Professional satisfaction is a significant quality measure for the effective management of healthcare systems. |
