Popis: There is no common opinion about the end of the Varna civilization and it is even contested that it left signs in history. However, a remarkable number of parallels are found by Bulgarian authors in respect of features of the Varna Chalcolithic culture and the later Nile culture. The problem of a possible connection between the two distant cultures has not been discussed yet.The present work lays out a hypothesis pretending to provide a solution to the problem, referring to the statement of the mythographer Apollodorus of Rhodes, according to whom the Egyptian goddess Isis is the goddess Io who fled out from the Balkans to Egypt. As arguments for this are presented 1/ the series of parallels between the two images; 2/ the serious contradictions of her route from her native Argos to the Nile and 3/ the notions of Isis as a goddess of seafaring, and of her husband Osiris, as a cultural hero, who gave the Egyptians a number of cultural benefits and, above all, the knowledge for casting of copper and gold—all these inherent in the maritime culture of Varna.
