Popis: Introduction: The surgical nurse profession is a „communicative” one. It cannot be practiced without extensive theoretical knowledge and practical communication skills. The more delicate and complex the patient's condition is preoperatively, the higher the level of communication and psychological support the nurse should provide. It is normal for the patient to have anxiety prior to a elective or emergency surgery during the preoperative period. Severe anxiety can cause unpleasant symptoms and stress. Typical symptoms include: palpitations, high blood pressure, irregular heart rhythm, nausea, abdominal pain, shortness of breath, and sleep problems. Mental anxiety becomes a problem preoperatively, because, due to being emotional, patients do not listen actively and do not understand information about surgery.Research shows that the incidence of preoperative anxiety varies from 60 to 92% in non-selected surgical patients and varies across surgical groups. The importance of communication as a factor can be found in resarch that shows that communication problems in the surgical team at work are the most significant ones and are responsible for higher levels of surgical error.Aim: The aim of this article is to analyze and propose behavioral strategies for surgical nurses to assist patients before surgery.Materials and Methods: The used methods included analysis of literary sources for the period January–March 2021, as well as a documentary method. Conclusion: By observing and applying the individual psychological approach and selected strategies by the nurse, the patient can deal with their anxiety before surgery.
