Đorđe Petrović, an academic painter who went through a developmental path from academic realism, expressionism and surrealism, found his painting manuscript in the watercolor technique. Originally from Gorski Kotar, Petrović finished high school in Karlovac, the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb, after which he returned to Karlovac where he remained until his death. Petrović's life was greatly marked by his pedagogical work, primarily with hearing-impaired children, and his mild, poetic nature, which marked him as a painter. He sought inspiration in nature and transferred it with soft lines and a pastel, monochromatic palette to his canvases. This paper analyzes his artistic development path, as well as the historical and cultural trends of the Karlovac art environment, but also his pedagogical work that greatly influenced Petrović as a man, but also as a painter. In the technique of watercolor, numerous canvases were created, which are analyzed in this paper, and which are thematically mainly related to the Karlovac rivers and its surroundings. Petrović was always looking for inspiration in nature and transferred his inner world to canvases with which he became one of the most important painters of Croatian modernity.
