The main goal of this paper is to analyse the hypothesis that the Malleus maleficarum, a late 15th century demonological treatise by Heinrich Kramer and Jacob Sprenger, had a great influence on the definition of the crime of witchcraft which has developed in witch trials in the early modern Kingdom of Croatia. To be more precise, the paper argues that all the key elements of Kramer’s concept of witchcraft can be found in the early modern court records from the witch trials which have been published by Ivan Tkalčić in a document called “Izprave o progonu vješticah u Hrvatskoj.” However, due to the fact that some court records of witch trials from the early modern Kingdom of Croatia are missing from “Izprave”, this paper also analyses witch trials which have not been mentioned by Tkalčić. The first influence of demonology in the Kingdom of Croatia can be traced back to the end of the 16th century. But, significant influence of demonology, the Malleus included, on the definition of the crime of witchcraft, has occurred during the 17th century. The definition of the crime of witchcraft was completed in 1699 when the most intense witch hunts have been recorded in the Kingdom of Croatia. In its analysis of the influence that the Malleus maleficarum has had on the definition of the crime of witchcraft in witch trials in the Kingdom of Croatia, the paper relies on the contemporary findings of the history of knowledge, or to be more specific, on the heuristic concept of the circulation of knowledge by Johan Östling. In the analytical focus of this thesis is the definition of the crime of witchcraft that was articulated in the demonological treatise the Malleus maleficarum, which was constructed by inverting several elements of the Catholic dogmas and practices.
