This study deals with the concept of intertextuality in its limited conception (following structuralism) and the global conception, to which French literary science (J. Kristeva, R. Barthes) has made a significant contribution. This theoretical background is then applied to the empirical experience of reading French works with students in the competition Choix Goncourt de la République Tchèque. Intertextuality played an important role here. The study concludes with open questions about intertextuality: questions about literary communication with the work, the author's intention and the tasks of literary science.
