Popis: This research discusses the work of J.R.R. Tolkien entitled The Fellowship of The Ring. This research focuses on analyzing how Tolkien presents the femininity and masculinity of female and male characters and investigating the external and internal conflicts that Tolkien portrays in this novel. Besides, this research focuses on the characters' feminine and masculine characteristics and the cause and effect of external and internal conflict in the story. The final focus of this study is to analyze how far Tolkien describes the characteristics of the characters and conflicts to deliver the novel's theme. In analyzing the research, I apply a patriarchal binary thought by Helen Cixous that only focuses on elements intrinsic to the novel: the characters. I also use the qualitative method and library research as the method of this research. As a result of this study, I claim that the dominant characteristic portrayed in the story is the masculine characteristic of male characters. Tolkien shows masculine characteristics in more detail than the feminine characteristics in the characters. The past war is a cause of external and internal conflicts in the story; in this case, conflicts between men and men and conflict within them.
