Popis: In the automotive industry, the major concern is a reduction in fuel consumption to save economy, energy, and protect the environment. To achieve it, improving the engine performance, minimizing the automobile weight, and improvement in aerodynamic force could also yield a large percentage reduction in the total fuel consumption and minimize the unfavorable environmental effects. In this research work, external aerodynamic forces, and airflow over a pickup vehicle with a rear spoiler attached on the rear end of its cab roof and/or on its tailgate using computational fluid dynamics was studied implementing realizable k-epsilon turbulence modeling. Detail dimension of generic pickup truck of extended cap used in other study were taken, as it is model is completed on solidwork, and called baseline model for the current research work. Three different configuration models were generated from the baseline, and as a consequence, improvement in drag coefficients was observed in all configuration models compared to the baseline. Relative to the baseline model, the drag reduction of 22%, 16%, and 12% was achieved on model two, model zero, and model one respectively. And also by the comparison made on lift coefficient, 24% decrement, 12% and 13% increment seen on model two, model one and model zero respectively. On top of that, the best result of other study achieved by add-on devices which shows 19% coefficient of drag reduction and 44% coefficient of lift reduction are also compared with the result of current study. The aerodynamic drag reduction and desired stability of a pickup truck utilizing rear spoiler as an add-on device leads to better fuel economy was also shown. And for future work, it is discussed that a computer which has high processing performance is recommended to shorten time of processing and enhance quality of mesh. And also further investigation on aerodynamic forces can be made possibly by changing frontal area of vehicle with extended possibility of using different airfoil shape at different angle of attack.
