Dentoral health is an important part of general health and quality of life depends on it. Modern individual preventive therapy relies on identification of risks, disease and protective factors. Therefore, education plans should be developed on individual bases. On the other hand, health's promotion is a much wider concept than prevention. It relies solely on health and should take place where people live, work, play, or spend time. It is a creative and cost-effective way to improve people’s health, including the dentoral one. The development of health literacy should be the first step of prevention and promotion of health because it is a powerful predictor of health. Embryonic development of the teeth is taking place at a very early stage of pregnancy. The general health of the child-bearing woman as well as the state of its oral cavity can also strongly affect the health of the child, because the transmission of the cariogenic bacteria is vertical. Pregnant women should be educated about appropriate nutrition and oral hygiene as well as about regular preventive examinations. This is also the period when she should learn how to take care of the child's oral health through the education about the importance of the breastfeeding. When a child is born, this education should be continued through the education on the appropriate nutrition and the hygiene of the child's oral cavity, as well as the importance of preventive examinations and other preventive measures such the fluoridation and fissure sealants. Care for dentoral health requires an interdisciplinary approach, i.e. the collaboration between a gynaecologist, a paediatrician, a general practice, a community nurses and a dental team, but this is also multidisciplinary approach if all other experts such as educators, teachers and professors, including also those who decide on the laws, taxes and the strategies concerning the health preservation are involved. |
