The aim of the paper is to present human trafficking and the possibility of implications for the practice of social work. Trafficking in human beings involves the use of force, fraud or coercion to obtain some kind of work or commercial sexual act. Every year, millions of men, women and children are victims of human trafficking around the world, human trafficking can occur in any community, and the victims can be of any age, race, gender or nationality. Over the last two decades, anti-trafficking movements have led to significant changes. Mainly due to awareness, education and the development of legislation, there is a visible paradigm shift in the way the world talks about, attitudes towards human trafficking, and the treatment of those who have been victims. The laws provide a basis for assisting victims and survivors, as well as prosecuting perpetrators in efforts to end trafficking. Trafficking in human beings is a terrible abuse of human rights, therefore, it is necessary to ensure that it is recognized, recorded and punished, and that victims receive the necessary assistance and support. The approach to social work is not only guided by the values of social justice and human rights; it also sees a greater micro and macro context associated with human trafficking. Social workers have a unique position to apply their knowledge and skills to people in their own environment, based on strengths and environmental approaches to see the problem outside the dichotomy of perpetrators and victims focused on qualities that empower individuals and groups of both victims and patron. |
