The development of a tourism destination depends on the kind and the type of tourist attractions available in its territory: usually, man-made and natural attractions (tangible heritage) represent the main reason for visiting a place and they act as enablers and flagships of a tourism destination: “no tourism can succeed without a suitable variety of attractions” (World Tourism Organization, 2012: 25). Some destinations take advantage of the presence of many primary attractions and they are able to provide tourists with many different experiences. Others spend many resources for promoting and marketing their attractions. The enhancement of heritage for the benefit of tourism is another possible means of development. But what happens when a destination has no primary tourist attractions available? Or when a destination has a lot of meaningful attractions but none of them has the appeal or the characteristics necessary for attracting, by itself, a relevant number of visitors?. |
