Iranian demonology is an intricate subject involving many different aspects that do pertain not only, as obvious and expectable, to the Mazdean religion, but also to a number of related cultures and spiritual tra-ditions, with which Iranian peoples have established important relations in the course of time. Its chronological spectrum ranges from the earliest phases of the proto-historic separation between Proto-Iranians and Proto-Vedic peoples through the formation of the main Iranian historical societies and the political vicissitudes of the Achaemenid, Parthian and Sasanian kingdoms, to present days. This is particularly true when we consider that Zoroastrianism is a living religion, and that some aspects of contemporary Iranian folklore belong to an ancestral substratum deeply rooted within the Mazdean traditions. In the present contribution the focus well be dedicated to the Zoroastrian doctrine, with a special attention on the "mental" dimenson fo evil, conceived mainly as a spiritual phenomenon, not strctly as a material force. |
