Origen has in fact introduced the philological-grammatical method, well established in Hellenistic-Roman literary culture, to the analysis of biblical texts and the scrutiny of their manuscripts. Philology appears in a largely positive light, but it has a dark side, as it can be abused. The philological study of biblical texts is such that it often leaves a ‘hermeneutical space’ for readers, without forcing them to a single interpretation. Scriptural study is a way to understand the existence and presence of God, but it is not the only way. |
