The first part of this study discusses the phenomenon, origin, and characteristics of urban poverty enclaves in Upper Silesia. The empirical basis for this description is the results of research and scientific studies created in cooperation with or under the direction of Professor Kazimiera Wódz since the 1980s. This characteristics of multi-problem communities is the background for theoretical considerations regarding the organisation of the local community as a methodology of action allowing for the introduction of change, improvement of living conditions, and solving common problems as part of social work in the local community. Social revitalisation is a specific type of Local Community Organisation. The post- -industrial socio-economic landscape of many cities in Upper Silesia along with their infrastructural, urban and social problems requires the use of adequately prepared and professionally carried out revitalisation programmes. Revitalisation in its theoretical dimension as well as practical recommendations for its application constitute a significant element in the work of Professor Kazimiera Wódz, the third part of this chapter is an attempt to summarise the said work. |
