Popis: | Background. The World Health Organization recommends to reduce an intake of added sugars. This reduction may lead to an increase in alternative sweetening methods by using sweeteners. As research has shown, the use of sweeteners might be unacceptable to consumers due to their attitudes and beliefs. In Lithuania, peculiarities of consumption of sugars and sweeteners are still little studied. There is a lack of research on the attitudes of the Lithuanian population towards the use of added sugars and sweeteners, therefore the objective of this study was to evaluate the attitude of Lithuanian adults towards the consumption of added sugars and sweeteners. Methods. A representative sample of the Lithuanian population of adults was formed. A total of 1008 residents aged 18 to 75 years participated. Data was collected using a questionnaire. With respect to social and demografic characteristics (sex, age, type of residence, employment, income, marital status, and education), distribution of respondents by answering to one question was analysed. Respondents were asked to indicate their likely behaviour in terms of added sugars if they knew that there a healthier than sugar sweetener exists. Results. Every fifth participant (20.7%) indicated no added sugar concumption and therefore no likely use of the healthier sweetener. Every second respondent among added sugar consumers (40.0% of whole sample) indicated that if they knew that there a healthier sweetener than sugar exists, they would try it and, if they liked it, they would use it instead of sugar. A large proportion of respondents (about 35.0% of whole sample) would ignore the fact that healthier than sugar sweetener exists and continue to consume sugar regardless of its effects on health. Younger, urban and higher educated respondents were more likely to opt for a healthier sweetener instead of added sugar (respectively, 45.7% vs. 34.4%, 43.3% vs. 31.2%, 47.6% vs. 37.3% of whole sample, p < 0.05). Conclusion. Only half of Lithuanian adult consumers of added sugars would make a rational decision and try to replace added sugars with healthier sweetener if they knew about the existance of it. Such a rational attitude was more prevalent among younger, urban and higher educated respondents. Every fifth respondent indicated no consumption of added sugars and no likely consumption of any added sweeteners |
