The contemporary research on Military Orders can be divided between two specific eras, with as turning point the 1980s revolution of the studies on this topics. Outside France, Great Britain, Ireland, Portugal and Spain, the research developed itself at first specially in Germany and then in Poland, while in the remaining countries in Europe and the rest of the world, the first important steps were made only after 1980, under the influence of the scientific progress, the activities of some major scientific institutions and the new political situation in the Eastern Europe. The Palmela Encounters offer us a rather realistic picture of the state of research on Military Orders, as its last edition gathered historians from ten different countries, including Germany and Italy, but also Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia and Switzerland. |
