A second home or the holiday house is an object built for an occasional stay, it is usually located less than a few hours away from the permanent address of the dwelling and for the person who uses it can have many meanings. It can be inherited or built anew and is often associated with vacation, hobbies, recreation and family reunions. In Croatia, the development of weekend culture and holiday houses (vikendica) started in the 1950s. The holiday houses are mostly built in rural areas, away from large urban centres, and the motives for which owners decide to build them are many: apart from the desire to relax and to connect with nature, motives can also be of economic nature – the desire to increase the home budget is a driver of the construction of many flats and houses for vacation and recreation. The development of secondary housing has a major impact on the ecology and the landscape of the area, and it is therefore necessary to take account of self-sustaining development.
