One of the most common definitions of stress today is that it is the body's reaction to certain situations in which an individual feels threatened for their mental or physical health. It can also be defined as a non-specific consequence of the increased demand for the organism, which exceeds its adaptive power. (1) Student period in life means a great step towards independence and the path of growing up. During this time, students face many life issues and various pressures from all sides, ie during this period there are many stressors that affect students. The level of stress, as well as the strategies that students use to cope with it, are of great importance for the prevention of many diseases and disorders, for which stress is one of the possible causes. The aim of this paper is to examine the level of stress in students in the first and third year of nursing, and to identify the most common forms of coping with stress in respondents. Nursing students of the first and third year of nursing studies in Rijeka were included in the study. A total of 44 respondents participated, of which 34 were women and 10 were men. Considering the year of study, 18 respondents are students of the first year of nursing, while 26 respondents are in the third year of the said study. An anonymous online survey was used to conduct the research. According to the survey results, respondents report high levels of stress, which are equal in first- and third-year students. Respondents also, regardless of the year of study, equally use certain coping strategies. As a way of solving problems and dealing with stress, respondents most often plan to solve the problem, try to see it positively, actively deal with the problem and seek instrumental and emotional support. The use of alcohol as a way to overcome stress, denial of problems, and behavioral separation from problems are the least prevalent forms in both groups. The research shows that the respondents, regardless of the desirable strategies for coping with stress, are under a significantly high amount of stress. Existing coping methods are not proving sufficient to successfully reduce the amount of stress. Taking into account the knowledge of how stress negatively affects various areas of functioning, as well as how it can have fatal consequences on the physical and mental health of an individual, there is a need for more serious understanding of stress in students and further research in this area, based on ways to prevent it.
