The aim of this paper was to analyse racial representations in video-games, mainly in The Elder Scrolls franchise, developed by Bethesda Game Studios, by concentrating on the notions of identity and its formation through the game’s influence, defining the culture and its values and beliefs which are instilled in the player when he decides to play as a certain race, and, lastly, the concept of race as a mirrored image of the real-life cultures. In the thesis, it was noted the existence of white hegemony because of its dominant presence and its continuance through the promotion of existing stereotypes. Moreover, the paper also focuses on the problem of encouragement of purification through the process of whitening and its negative outcomes in the time of an identity crisis – when the ideas of self-actualization and improvement are promoted. However, this game also allows for the perception of the world through the eyes of the marginalized which enables feelings of sympathy for the minorities. Cilj ovog rada bio je analizirati reprezentaciju rasa u video igrama, ponajviše u franšizi The Elder Scrolls, koju je razvila Bethesda Game Studios, koncentrirajući se na pojmove identiteta i njegovog formiranja kroz utjecaj igre, definirajući kulturu te vrijednosti i uvjerenja koji se usađuju u igrača kad odluči igrati kao određena rasa i, na kraju, koncept rase kao zrcalne slike kultura iz stvarnog života. U radu je zabilježeno postojanje bijele hegemonije zbog njezine dominantne prisutnosti i njenog nastavka kroz promicanje postojećih stereotipa. Štoviše, rad se također bavi problematikom poticanja pročišćenja kroz koncept izbjeljivanja te negativne ishode u vrijeme krize identiteta - kada se promiču ideje samoaktualizacije i poboljšanja. Međutim, ova igra također omogućuje percepciju svijeta kroz oči marginaliziranih, što omogućuje suosjećanje s manjinama. |
