Marine litter is recognized as one of the major ecological problems. It has a negative impact on ecosystems and their functions, organisms and also on human health. The aim of this study was to determine quantity, composition and sources of stranded marine litter on Sakarun beach located on Dugi otok in Zadar county. Study was carried out in the period of year 2022. and beach surveys were conducted once in each season. For collection and analysis of samples Methodology for Monitoring Marine Litter on Beaches – Macro Debris (>2,5cm) developed by DeFishGear project was used. During the surveys there was collected a total of 3096 marine litter items. The average density was 0,75 items/m2 and Clean Coast Index value was 15,05 which categorizes beach Sakarun as „Dirty“. Artificial polymer materials were the most abundant of all materials (97,19%). Main sources of litter on this beach were related to as tourism, recreation, poor waste management practices (26,58%) and aquaculture and fisheries (10,14%). Land-based sources accounted for 26,91% while sea-based sources accounted for 12,40%. The results of this research gave a better insight into problem of marine litter on beaches of eastern Adriatic Sea. |
