The production of plastics is a global success but has now become a threat to the environment as it generates microplastic particles (< 5 mm in size). Microplastics can enter freshwater systems via various pathways and has been detected in waters and sediments all around the world. In this paper, the current knowledge on the presence and distribution of microplastics in freshwater ecosystems is presented. The most frequently used methods of sampling and analysis of microplastics are listed and information on the currently known effects of microplastics on freshwater biota is presented.
