Research was conducted in order to determine the characteristics of bird communities in forests of Nature parks Medvednica and Žumberak – Samoborsko gorje. The point-count method was used for analyzing bird community and circular plot method for habitat mapping. The tree basal area was used to distribute investigated points into five forest types: oak, beech, coniferous, mixed deciduous and conifer/deciduous mixed forests. The number of bird species recorded in Medvednica was 39 and in Žumberak 49. Population density of forest singing birds was greater in Medvednica and biodiversity of bird species, according to Shannon – Wiener index, was greater in Žumberak. Dominant species with highest population densities in both Parks were Chaffinch, Robin and Blackcap. Population densities of particular bird species and ecological groups were different between particular forest categories and also between the two Parks. Population densities showed dependence on structural vegetation characteristics.
