Saint Petersburg is one of the youngest cities not only in Russia, but also in Europe. This Thesis presents development of Saint Petersburg throughout different historical periods and different reigns. It is important to consider historical developments in order to better understand the European influence not only in St. Petersburg, but also in Russia. The Romanov dynasty play a major role in the development of the city, and their most prominent representative is also a founder of Saint Petersburg. Peter the Great claimed to create a magnificent city that would consolidate European and Russian culture into one. The city, along with architects from Europe, soon became a major capital of Russia. Suspending the monarchy will mark the stagnation of the development of the city and the closure of Russia. Saint Petersburg is today known as a multicultural city with a rich cultural heritage.
