Phosphate-accumulating bacteria are used in the process of enhanced biological phosphorus removal from wastewater. There is huge interest for different natural carriers in which is possible to immobilize bacteria to achieve a better purification of wastewater. Red soil is good carrier of phosphate-accumulating bacteria Acinetobacter junii. Red soil has a good capacity of phosphorus removal (to 32,4%) which is significantly improved with addition of A. junii (to 51,9%).Red soil contains different kinds of iron oxides and hydroxides which give her a red colour. Comparison of results in original red soil and red soil with removed surface iron or surface and octahedron iron indicate that there is no significant difference in the number of immobilizing bacteria and their ability of phosphorus removal. Contents of iron in red soil, has no influence on metabolism of phosphate-accumulating bacteria.
