Geographic information systems (GIS) are nowadays unavoidable tool in domain of spatial planning. GIS is used for both simple and complex spatial analysis and spatial modeling with main aim to create qualitatively new spatial data which can be used as a support in decision making. This paper analyses possibilities, advantages and disadvantages of GIS application in spatial planning and broad theoretical knowledge has been applied in case study. City of Zagreb is facing the problem of insufficient student accommodation capacities which has a negative impact on student standard. In order to preserve its high level in the future it is necessary to build new student dorms. Main objective of the case study is to identify their potential optimal locations in the area of City of Zagreb by conducting a multicriterial analysis. GIS analysis explores the possibilities of spatial modeling using eight criteria which are based upon situation analysis conducted in six key domains – student dorms and student infrastructure, public transport, education, culture and entertainment, environment and demographic features. The analysis results in four potential zones of location which are all located outside of the city centre. Two locations of primary importance are located on east and west city outskirts (city districts Maksimir and Črnomerec), while comparing to them two complementing zones of secondary importance are located further south (city districts Peščenica – Žitnjak and Trešnjevka – north). |
