Popis: Molecular and physico-chemical characterisation of low-temperature setting inorganic materials. H. Rahier*, M. Esaifan, F. Slatyi, I Aldabsheh, M. Alshaaer, H. Khoury, J. Wastiels *Dept. Phys. Chem and Pol. Sci, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, hrahier@vub.ac.be In our group a continuous search for new materials is ongoing during the last decades. The first goal was to develop cheap construction materials for underdeveloped countries. Later on there was a shift to high tech construction materials although collaboration with developing countries is still one of the points of interest. The interest in low-temperature curing materials can be energy saving, or applications that do not allow elevated temperatures like in dentistry or repair of constructions. Examples of alkaline systems include -Sodium hydroxide with kaoline, giving hydroxysodalite -Aqueous silicate solution with thermally activated clay (eg metakaoline, fly ash) giving amorphous aluminoslicates termed geopolymers In collaboration with prof. Khoury from University of Jordan, the usefulness of raw materials from Jordan are studied. Kaolinitic soils are abundant and the first results to use these as raw materials for geopolymers are promising. Also other raw materials are tried out. The goal is to provide a replacement for concrete that can be used to produce for instance building bricks. In this paper, the chemistry behind the geopolymerization will be highlighted. Some thermophysical properties will also be discussed. H. Rahier, B. Van Mele and J. Wastiels, J. Mater. Sci., 31 (1996) 71-79 AND 80-85. H. Rahier, W. Simons, M. Biesemans and B. Van Mele, J. Mater.
