The article critically assesses selected aspects of studies of nationalism and outlines themes and topics that are often overlooked or given only a marginal role in broader research of this phenomenon. While at first glance incompatible, these topics actually represent the core of the discussion, helping to highlight those antagonisms which research of nationalism has found itself involved in the last few decades, where a priori critics were found on one hand and partial defenders on the other. The article reveals views that see nationalism as a special genre of discourse, define the dichotomies that are some of the most recognisable features identified by different authors, offers some sociological classification of nationalism, and focuses on certain key concepts of selected theorists on nationalism - imagined communities, invented traditions and banal nationalism. |
