The article presents Johann Ludwig Schönleben (1618-1681) as an orator and preacher, and addresses his rhetorical activity through three main periods. From his early rhetorical period, nine speeches have been preserved as well as his odes to Habsburg rulers, who proved to be important venerators of the Virgin Mary. During his most active period, Schönleben prepared four collections of sermons in German and Latin for publication, and three of his speeches were printed independently. If his manuscript sermons had also been preserved, his oeuvre would have included five additional collections. Towards the end of his life, Schönleben only appeared in the role of an occasional preacher; a preacher's manual with allegories was printed posthumously. The conclusion outlines the main characteristics of his sermons and shows that Schönleben clung to the traditional Jesuit ecclesiastical rhetoric of the post-Tridentine period, even though his personal preaching style also displayed certain features of contemporary Baroque rhetorical elements. |
