Contemporary social movements are an alternative to political systems based on parliamentary democracy, in which consumerism and individualism are the dominant values. The thought of social movements constitutes, for their participants, the concept of a return to joint and participatory values in the process of making social decisions. These concepts are, for example: participatory democracy, libertarian municipalism, participatory economics, cooperative movement and anarcho-syndicalism.
