Introduction: A new type of coronavirus was discovered in December 2019 in Wuhan, China. Initial cases were related to the animal market in Wuhan. The World Health Organization declared this a global pandemic on March 12, 2020. Since initially there was no vaccine for this infectious disease, prevention was related to the application of standard precautions and traditional public health measures such as isolation, quarantine, social distance, aimed at preventing local transmission and transmission of the disease from an infected person. to healthy. Objective: The aim of the study was to examine whether healthcare professionals used personal protective equipment rationally and correctly following the guidelines of the World Health Organization. Furthermore, how they were educated about the proper use of personal protective equipment, and the extent to which protective equipment and the reorganization of work made the work of health workers more difficult. Methods: The research included 374 respondents who work in the health system in the Republic of Croatia. Descriptive and inferential methods of statistical analysis were used. Results: Most respondents believe that protective equipment has made it difficult to work and perform specific procedures, and the quality of work is impaired. Communication with the patient is worse than before the obligation to use personal protective equipment. Most health workers had secured conditions for the proper use of the equipment and adhered to the recommendations of the World Health Organization. Education of health workers was conducted by the institution or independently but not to a satisfactory extent. Conclusion: Since the advent of COVID-19 to date, efforts have been made to increase the production and distribution of personal protective equipment in the global supply chain worldwide. Personal protective equipment plays a major role in protecting workers and preventing the further spread of the disease. For this reason, every healthcare worker must be adequately educated on how to use protective equipment and it must always be available to him so that he can work according to the rules of the profession. Nevertheless, global shortages of protective equipment that affect the safety of health professionals and the sustainability of basic health care provision are still present. |
