Popis: Svjedoci smo svakodnevnih novih spoznaja u medicini, no za neke probleme još uvijek teško nalazimo rješenje. We are witnessing new knowledge in medicine on a daily basis, but it is still difficult to find a solution to some problems. One of the problems that has been getting increased attention is the resistance of bacteria to antibiotics. In recent decades, efforts have been intensified to raise awareness of this problem, both among lay people and among medical professionals. This paper presents the results of a survey on the knowledge and attitudes of nurses / technicians about antibiotics and antibiotic resistance. The research involved nurses / technicians of all profiles and places of employment, as well as undergraduate students of nursing. The survey included 544 participants. In addition to demographics, data was collected on attitudes and knowledge about antibiotic resistance, antibiotics in the environment, actions promoting antibiotic awareness, hand hygiene, opportunities to use knowledge in everyday work and motivation to use knowledge. The obtained results were compared with the results of a similar survey conducted among medical professionals of the European Union in 2019. Comparability was ensured using a standardized questionnaire. The aim of the research was to identify the knowledge and attitudes of nurses / technicians and nursing students about antibiotics and antibiotic resistance, to investigate the effects of selected parameters on them, and to compare the results with the European average. According to results of the survey, degree of education has the greatest impact on objective knowledge about antibiotics and antibiotic resistance. The pattern of motivation compared to the European average is specific due to the Croatian health system, where nurses / technicians are given relatively little importance. Although in some fields the knowledge of the survey participants is far ahead of the European average, the overall results show that only the most educated nurses / technicians can compare with the European average. The results of the survey coincide with data from prior literature, which indicate the need to introduce practically applicable knowledge in school curricula and frequent thematic short continuing education courses.
