The coronavirus disease pandemic (COVID-19) poses a challenge to health systems, while health workers are at high risk. The protection of healthcare professionals is of paramount importance for maintaining continuous patient care and maintaining the functioning of healthcare systems. Personal protective equipment (PPE) used in addition to administrative and engineering control measures is the last line of defence and the core of the protection component. The ability to limit the transmission of COVID-19, a disease caused by the novel coronavirus, in healthcare facilities requires infection prevention and control measures, of which personal protective equipment is the main element. When used properly, personal protective equipment such as gloves, aprons, eye protection, masks, and clothing functions as a physical barrier to the transmission of infectious particles present in body fluids. It also protects patients from transmission through contaminated hands or clothing of healthcare personnel. This is pivotal in limiting the acquisition and transmission of the virus to protect both healthcare professionals, patients cared for and the wider community. |
