Popis: Laxative property of dried bark of Frangula alnus Mill. (synonym Rhamnus frangula L.) is known for centuries and it is still in use in treatment of constipation. Medicines based on F. alnus bark (Frangulae cortex) according to the EU parliament and European medicines agency products for human use are considered as medicinal products with »well-established medicinal use«. Nowadays on Croatian's market are available F. alnus-based preparations in the form of tea, pills or powders. Laxative property of F. alnus bark is attributed to its main constituents, anthraquinones, anthracene derivatives which are class of the pharmacologically active natural compounds. The main anthraquinone present in the bark of F. alnus is emodin and laxative property of F. alnus bark is directly connected to emodin. However, recent studies have shown that biological effects of F. alnus bark and its main antraquinone emodin are much broader than just a laxative effect. lt is shown that they have antimicrobial, antiviral, antifungal and antioxidant effect. Furthermore, for emodin is shown antitumour effect. Except to their positive biological effects, it is demonstrated that bark of F. alnus and emodin are toxic. Therefore, treatment of constipation with medicines based on bark of F. alnus should only be considered for short term use.
