House- and carework are fundamental in the structure and functioning of neoliberal societies. The full recognition of the social and economic value of household work is crucial to the empowerment of careworkers, who are mostly women, but it largely depends on a legal regime that still underestimates reproductive work, both in the family and in the market. Starting from the analysis of the regulation of household work within family law, this article shows the influence of the legal treatment of unpaid carework on commodified and racialized house- and carework, and on the social and economic conditions of waged houseworkers. |
