The literature on cardinals examined in this article (writings on conclaves, biographies, funeral orations and relations, as well as descriptions of funeral apparati) demonstrate an ostentatious prevalence of the “purple” on the “blood”, of the ecclesiastical nobility on the honour of the lineage, of the genealogy of the Church on that of the family trees. Such prevalence was of course rhetoric within a system that made the kinship relationships as its strength and had a noble social block behind itself. The exception of some cardinals or popes of humble birth, indeed, confirmed the rule of the patrician or aristocratic descent of the majority of them. In this regard, as Peter Burke (2001) suggests, art and literature rather than “reflecting the life of their time […] compensate for what is lacking in their time” and in some way influence it. Los textos de la "literatura" sobre cardenales examinados en este artículo (escrituras de conclave, biografías, oraciones y relaciones de exequias, así como maquinas funerarias) demuestran una ostentada prevalencia de la purpura sobre la sangre, de la nobleza eclesiástica sobre el honor del linaje, de la genealogía de la Iglesia sobre aquella de los arboles familiares. Prevalencia, por supuesto, retorica en un sistema que hacía del las relaciones de parentesco su punto fuerte y que tenía un preciso bloque social nobiliario a sus espaldas, donde la excepción de algún cardenal o papa de humilde origen confirmaba la regla de la ascendencia patricia o aristocrática de los otros. En ese sentido, como sugiere Peter Burke, más que “reflejar la vida de su tiempo”, parece que arte y literatura “compensen lo que falta a su época” y en alguna manera influyan en ella. |
