The number of students with disabilities participating in higher education is on the increase largely as a result of the legislative changes, funding initiatives, and focused disability programmes that have been introduced to improve the integration of these students into higher education institutions. For example, in Australia, the number of tertiary students who self-identified as having a disability increased from 21,307 in 2001 to 46,493 in 2012. This represents an increase from 3.14 per cent to 5.05 per cent of the total higher education student population. |
