Popis: The article concerns the semantic potential of terms and specialised expressions and focuses on the metaphor in the terminology of economics used in German economic press articles. The theoretical investigations are based on the 3-level-model of meaning proposed by M. Bierwisch and on the basic assumptions of cognitive semantics proposed by. M. Schwarz (1992, 2008, 2013), according to which the constitution of meaning is conceptualisation - a dynamic process, that relies on the interaction of conceptual, semantic and pragmatics factors. The author discusses main differences in the semantic potential of terminological compounds and specialised neologisms and explains the process of metaphor building and understanding. The second part of the paper concentrates on the analysis of metaphors in the economic press. The aim of the analysis is to explore, what types of metaphors occur in German press texts, how influence they the interpretation of terms and specialised expressions and what kind of communicative function do they express.
