The article examines two writers of the 19th century in their self-conception as author, on the basis of the correspondence between Helmina von Chézy and Amalia Schoppe. It studies the question to what extent specific patterns of female public bzw. counter-public seem to be established in the medium letter. As can be shown, letter-writing extends the reach for writing women. It opens a space for topics and voices excluded from the public discourse, and establishs a basis for communication or a community of like-minded individuals. Thus, letters contributed to the emancipation of women in culture and literature in the first half of the 19th century. |
