Popis: The issue of competence development was analyzed in relation to the teacher and his educational activities. The topic was presented from two perspectives. The first perspective concerned the requirements for exercising the profession and improving the skills, and the second was to present the reality the teachers have to face at school. Therefore, the first part of the article was devoted to the analysis of teacher competence concerning (1) the description of the concept, (2) the determination of the meaning, definition, (3) various types of classification. The second part is based on the research carried out at the gymnasium in Dobczyce. The analyses show that the expectations and demands the society associates with teachers often overshoot the reality and the possibilities of their implementation. In the school which was a subject of the study the education was limited to punishment, inconsistent and ill-considered actions imposed on young people.
